The Jackson State University National Alumni Association, Inc., (JSUNAA) chartered the new Southeastern Virginia Alumni Chapter on Saturday, April 10, 2010, at the Central Library in Hampton, Virginia.  The Southeastern Virginia Chapter is the 63rd chapter in the JSU National Alumni Association. The charter members are Henry Stovall, Stephanie Sanders, Vernita Baldwin, Leon Cole, Eddie Downing and Ralph Wormley. Henry Stovall, chapter president, presided over the chartering ceremony that included greetings by the JSUNAA Northeast Regional Vice President, Solomon Henderson that also presented the charter.  JSUNAA First Vice President, Vera Watson, presented the “Challenge” and installed the officers.  Gwen Caples, JSUNAA Executive Director, talked about the importance of student recruitment, fundraising, outreach and advocacy, and made a presentation on “The Campaign for Jackson State.”  Sharon Davis, president of the Washington, D.C. alumni chapter, provided remarks and encouraged collaborative efforts between the two chapters to promote Jackson State University. The following officers were appointed:  Henry Stovall, President; Stephanie  K. Sanders, First Vice President; Vernita Baldwin, Second Vice President and Chaplain; Eddie Downing, Treasurer and Parliamentarian; Dr. Leon Cole, Secretary; Ralph Wormley, Financial Secretary; Linda Wormley, Historian and Andre Walker, Sergeant-At-Arms. During first year, April 2010 – June 2011, the chapter conducted the following programs and projects that the chapter continues:  “Show Your School Pride” T-shirt Scholarship fundraiser party, was held at the Alpha Center in Hampton, participation in the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign in Hampton, and Adopted a Hampton Family for a Thanksgiving Basket of food and gifts for Christmas.  The chapter participated in its first student recruitment event, MegaGenesis College Fair sponsored by Zeta Lambda Chapter, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.  Mattie Stovall joined the chapter and became its first Associate Member.  The chapter continued to grow with B. Jean Downing also joining the chapter.  Members took turn hosting the monthly chapter meetings. In July 2010, chapter president Henry Stovall was appointed as a board member for the Northeast Region.  President Stovall attended the 2010 JSUNAA Fall Council meeting in Jackson.  During this meeting he represented the chapter and presented the chapter report on past chapter activities and plan for the remainder of the fiscal year. The chapter conducted its first election in May 2011.  The following officers were elected:  Henry Stovall, President, Linda Wormley, Vice President, Leon Cole, Secretary, Ralph Wormley, Financial Secretary and Eddie Downing, Treasurer.  The following officers were appointed, Mattie Stovall, Chaplain, Eddie Downing, Parliamentarian, Linda Wormley, Historian, Leon Cole, and Reporter. During the fiscal year July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2012 the chapter participated in two student recruitment events:  MegaGenesis College Fair in Newport News, and Phoebus High School Career Day in Hampton.  The chapter donated $500 for a scholarship to Jackson State University senior Louis Varella.  The chapter held a garage sale at the home of Eddie and Jean Downing to raise funds for scholarships.  The Show your School Pride T-shirt Party was held at Mary Helen’s Restaurant in Hampton.  The adopted family lived in Hampton.  President Henry Stovall and Mattie represented the chapter at the JSUNAA National Biennial Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana in June 2011.  Leon Cole was presented the Young Alumni Achievement Award at the conference. During the 2012 – 2013 fiscal, year the chapter lost some members but continued to grow by having nine active members.  The Annual Show your School Pride T-shirt Party was held at its regular location, Mary Helen’s Restaurant, the adopted family lived in Newport News and the Red Kettle Campaign was at the Peninsula Town Center in Hampton.  The chapter established a Facebook page and published its first edition of its newsletter, The Southeastern Virginia Light, in the fall of 2012.  The chapter also participated in two student recruitment events.  President Stovall represented the chapter at the Fall and Mid-Minter Council Meetings in Jackson.  During the Fall Council Meeting the chapter received an award for Membership Recruitment.  The chapter supported the First Annual Black Tie Gala in Jackson by purchasing a half page ad and donating items for the silent auction.  On April 13, 2013, the chapter held is 3rd Year Anniversary Celebration at the home of Eddie and Jean Downing in Hampton.  Regional Vice President Lillian Wilkinson-Maynor and her husband Sherwin Maynor attended the celebration.  The following officers were elected for the fiscal year that starts July 1, 2013; Henry Stovall, President, Linda Wormley, Vice President, Leon Cole, Secretary, Ralph Wormley, Financial Secretary and Eddie Downing, Treasurer.  The following officers were appointed, Mattie Stovall, Chaplain, B. Jean Downing, Parliamentarian, Dexter Brookins, Sargent-at-Arms, Linda Wormley, Historian and Leon Cole, Reporter.  Henry Stovall was reelected Northeast Region Board Member.  President Stovall and Mattie Stovall represented the chapter at the JSUNAA National Biennial Conference in Tunica, Mississippi in June 2013. From July 2013 to June 2014, the chapter’s membership increased to thirteen.  The chapter participated in the following student recruitment events; Hampton City Schools Division Regional College Fair, Phoebus High School Career Day and Megagenesis College Fair.  The chapter donated $500 to support the second Black Tie and Scholarship Gala in Jackson.  The Annual Show your School Pride T-shirt Party was held at Mary Helen’s Restaurant in Hampton.  The chapter participated in the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign at the Peninsula Town Center in Hampton and the adopted family lived in Newport News.  The chapter fellowshipped at the Village Church in Virginia Beach in October in celebration of JSU’s Founders Day and presented a check for the church’s scholarship fund.  President Stovall and Mattie Stovall represented the chapter at the Northeast Regional Meeting in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania in June 2014. During the fiscal year from July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015 the chapter boasted fourteen active members.  Chapter members made donations to the Tom Joyner Foundation to support Jackson State University during the School of the Month Campaign.  The chapter established its scholarship program and donated $1,000 to the JSU Development Foundation to fund the scholarships. The chapter participated in the Hampton City Schools Division Regional College Fair, the Phoebus High School Career Day and the MegaGenesis College Fair.  The Show your School Pride T-shirt party was held at Mary Helen’s Restaurant in Hampton.  This year the adopted family was from Virginia Beach and the chapter participated in the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign at the Wal-Mart in Virginia Beach.  The chapter donated $240.00 to the Salvation Army’s of the Virginia Peninsula to sponsor youth to its summer camp.  The chapter held its 5th Anniversary Celebration at the Alpha Center in Hampton on April 11, 2015.  President Stovall presented certificates of appreciation to all officers and miniature tiger statues were presented to all six charter members.  The following officers were elected in May 2015; Leon Cole, President; Henry Stovall, Vice President; Linda Wormley, Secretary; Eddie Downing, Financial Secretary and Ralph Wormley, Treasurer.  The following officers were appointed, Mattie Stovall, Chaplain; Jean Downing, Parliamentarian; Terry Hodges, Sargent-At- Arms; and Henry Stovall, Historian and Reporter. From July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2016, the chapter continued to grow.  The chapter did not host it’s Annual Show your School Pride T-shirt party this year.  The adopted family lived in Newport News.  The chapter participated in the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign in Hampton at the Peninsula Town Center.  President Cole represented the chapter at the Fall and Mid-Winter Council meetings in Jackson. The chapter received an award for Community Service and Outreach for Category D chapters.  Henry Stovall was elected Northeast Region Vice President in May 2016.  President Stovall, Mattie Stovall, and Leon Cole represented the chapter at the Northeast Region Meeting in Silver Spring, Maryland.
